I have never enjoyed rehearsal with any group before or since as much as I enjoyed rehearsal with UCD Choral Scholars. I still experience that anticipation nowadays, when they are good enough to invite the Alumni to join for concert. It was truly a pleasure to make music for a couple of hours twice a week. Performing with them was merely the icing on the cake.
However, to remember only the music would be to tell only half the story. In Choral Scholars I made friends for life. Experiences such as winning the National Mixed Voice Competition in Sligo, performing in St. Peter’s or putting on a concert involving period instruments and internationally renowned soloists, will stay with me forever, and the people with whom I shared those events are still some of my dearest companions. It is hard to believe it all happened in only one year.
These days, I am working as a doctor in nephrology, but I still somehow find time to sing - much to my girlfriend’s perpetual despair. Unfortunately,Ithink I hit my artistic zenith in my year with Scholars. I have a multitude of memories, many of them unprintable, but all of them fond.
